WHY THE WEST COAST?
VELDDRIF, LAAIPLEK, PORT OWEN AND DWARSKERSBOS {modal url=http://awestcoastjewel.co.za/images/stories/map2.jpg|width=615|height=551}(Please see map for location){/modal}
Three of these towns are so close to each other, it is difficult to say where one starts and the other ends with the exception of Dwarskersbos.
Port Owen, the most luxurious of the three towns, with its large villas and sailing-yacht marina, is nestled between the other two more humble and down-to-earth towns – Laaiplek with its fish processing factories at the mouth of the Berg River, and Velddrif with its bokkom industry a few kilometres to the east, higher up the river.
Laaiplek was the first of the three towns to develop. Laaiplek has a large wharf where several trawlers, which are used to catch pelagian fish for the Marine Products factory, dock.
Velddrif is known as the “Bokkomhoofstad” of South Africa. Here a series of small individual factories are found along the river, which produces about 95% of South Africa’s bokkoms. Each factory has its own small jetty on the river at the front of the factory.
Dwarskersbos is a quiet coastal town, situated approximately 12 kilometres north of Laaiplek and is seen as one of the undiscovered jewels of the West Coast. There are different versions to the origin of the name of this village, but an accepted version is that the name is derived from the locally prevalence of the indigenous specie “Kersbos” (Euclea Racemosa). The story is told that the settlement started as an overnight stop for earlier transporters (moving produce to and fro Laaiplek) where the travellers would set up camp near the Kersbosse, and positioned their ox wagons in relation to the Kersbosse and the prevailing winds (dwars van die Kersbosse). With virtually no crime, Dwarskersbos is popular among retirees who can take advantage of miles and miles of unspoilt beach, abundant birdlife not to mention the peaceful atmosphere.
Dwarskersbos is located within easy access of all the many activities on the West Coast and is the perfect investment for those wishing to own their own piece of paradise in this picturesque part of the South Africa.
Port Owen is marshland which was developed during the second half of the previous century as a luxury life-style residential area with a sailing-yacht marina – THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN SOUTH AFRICA with the lowest mooring fees. A network of canals connects the marina with the river and the sea. It is the only deep water marina in South Africa. Overseas visitors often enter the river from the sea and dock at the marina, where they live on their yachts for several months, enjoying the sunshine, peace and security of Port Owen while sailing in the bay.
